S1 E01: The Promises of Fame - Activity description

Each episode offers a choice of seven categories of activities, all downloadable for free. These include:

  • Worksheets (in many cases multi-level)

  • Lesson plans

  • PowerPoint presentations

Season 1 Episode 1 offers and extra 'Getting started' category.

A short worksheet is designed to engage your students' interest in the Rags to Riches series before they begin Episode 1. It consists of some short 'warmer' activities to introduce students to the band, music and podcast. There is also a PowerPoint support. Once your students have completed the worksheet, we recommend that you proceed to the Intros and outros section.

The intro and the outro are the opening and closing sequences of a song, piece of music or video. Each episode of Rags to Riches has an intro and an outro. The intro introduces a key element of the episode, inviting students to use their predictive skills. The outro highlights the main grammar and vocabulary areas contained within the episode. 

 

For Episode 1 the Intro and outro worksheet contains 5 different activities. There are 3 different versions of the worksheet. The prediction activity in the intro section is slightly different in each, and the numbers indicate the level of challenge. There is also a lesson plan and an accompanying PowerPoint presentation.

'On song': performing at peak efficiency or ability (Collins Dictionary)

In the On song section, pupils work directly with the lyrics of the Rags to Riches song for the episode.

 

For Episode 1 there are 3 different versions of the worksheet. The numbers indicate the level of challenge.

There is also a lesson plan and an accompanying PowerPoint presentation.

A loudspeaker is a piece of equipment, for example part of a radio or hi-fi system, through which sound comes out. (Collins Dictionary) 

The Loud speakers section is about speaking

For this episode, students play a card game to practise the idiomatic expressions in the episode. The cards can be found in the Resource. There is also a lesson plan

In a recording studio, individual ‘tracks’ (recordings of an instrument or voice) are combined to create the final blend (or ‘mix’) of sounds that become the finished song. In the same way, language learners mix different skills together for every kind of interaction. This section is designed to help them work on various skills simultaneously.

For Episode 1 the Mix down worksheet contains 4 different activities. There are 3 different versions of the worksheet. Two of the activities are slightly different in each, and the numbers indicate the level of challenge. There is also a lesson plan and an accompanying PowerPoint presentation.

'Script doctor' (n): one who revises or alters a script to improve it. (Collins Dictionary).

The Script doctors section aims to familiarise learners with everyday language in the context of the episode script, encouraging them to interact directly with the script.

The Over to you section invites students to explore their own opinions of a given topic.

For Episode 1, the topic is the qualities required to be famous. There is a worksheet for all levels, and also a lesson plan and an accompanying PowerPoint presentation.

 

Potluck.png

'Potluck' (n.): also pot-luck, 1590s. from pot (n.1) + luck; with notion of “one’s luck or chance as to what may be in the pot.” (Etymonline)

 

The Potluck section may contain any kind of fun activity based on the theme of the episode. For this episode, students complete a crossword puzzle about music styles.
